Spic Macay – Mesmerizing Musical Event

The senior students of Tagore International School , Vasant Vihar were treated to a morning of  Hindustani  classical music by some of the most illustrious  names of the present time, courtesy of Spic Macay.  Vocalist Padmashree Ulhas Kashalkar, accompanied by tabla maestro Padmashree Pandit Suresh Talwalkar , with Dr Vinay Mishra on the harmonium and Dr Ojas Pratap Singh and Shri Pulkit Sharma playing tanpura were the distinguished guests at the school on the  22nd of  August, 2022 .

The artists were welcomed with a tika and the traditional lighting of the lamp, accompanied by a shloka sung by the students. Pandit Ulhas Kashalkar held the students enthralled from the very first notes of Raag Jaunpuri , taking them through Brindavani Sarang and concluding with a moving rendition of Hindol. The harmony of the vocals with the instruments and the masterly tabla playing by Pandit Suresh Talwalkar was almost surreal.

The question and answer session which followed was enlivened by a number of well thought of queries from the students. The differences between gharanas, between Hindustani and Carnatic music, and the future of classical music were some of the topics touched upon. Panditji showed his quick sense of humour when he answered saying ‘You are the future…’ He advised students to create within themselves an understanding and a love for classical music by listening to it regularly, thus growing to love it. Spic Macay is indeed a wonderful initiative that provides glimpses into the rich cultural heritage of India  for students, thus sensitising them to these glorious traditions.
